RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Sensor Module (Doppler Radar Proximity & Motion Detector)

Bring advanced, wall-penetrating motion detection to your automation systems with the industrial-grade RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Sensor Module. Powered by Doppler radar technology, this highly efficient sensor drops the limitations of standard infrared motion sensors by emitting a low-power microwave signal and measuring the frequency shift of the reflected waves caused by moving objects.

Unlike traditional Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors that rely on heat signatures and require a clear line of sight, the RCWL-0516 uses a specialized radar processing integrated circuit to detect movement through thin walls, glass panes, acrylic panels, and plastic enclosures. It serves as the definitive choice for concealed security systems, automated smart lighting switches, touchless entry triggers, and interactive consumer electronics.

Key Features

  • Doppler Radar Sensing: Utilizes high-frequency microwave waves to spot moving objects, providing exceptional responsiveness to forward, backward, and lateral movements.

  • 360-Degree Omni-Directional Detection: Features a comprehensive, spherical sensing field rather than a restricted cone layout, capturing movement from all directions around the module.

  • Wall-Penetrating Capability: Easily detects human or vehicular movement through thin barriers like drywall, glass doors, plywood sheets, and plastic project boxes.

  • Smart Back-End Tuning Pads: Equipped with unpopulated hardware pads on the back of the board that allow you to solder basic resistors or capacitors to adjust functional parameters:

    • C-TM Pad: Adjusts the output trigger repeat time.

    • R-GN Pad: Adjusts the overall detection distance range.

    • R-CDS Pad: Allows you to add a light-dependent resistor (photoresistor) to disable the sensor completely during daylight hours.

  • Direct Microcontroller Compatibility: Outputs a clean, bounce-free digital High/Low square wave that plugs straight into any digital input or hardware interrupt pin.

Hardware Wiring & Interface Mapping

The module breaks out a highly organized 5-pin interface to make hardware hookups simple and fast across boards like Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi:

  • 3V3 (3.3V Output): Regulated internal 3.3V power output. Can be used to power small low-current sensors or microchips (under 100 mA).

  • GND: System Ground Reference.

  • OUT (Digital Output): Connects directly to a digital input pin. Stays LOW in standby; drives HIGH (3.3V) the instant movement is registered.

  • VIN (Power Input): Main power input rail. Supports a wide input voltage range from 4V up to 28V DC.

  • CDS (Light Sensor Disable): Optional pin. Grounding this pin disables the motion detection loop. Ideal for connecting an external photoresistor for night-only operation.

Common Applications

  • Concealed Home Security Systems: Mount the sensor completely hidden inside walls, wooden panels, or hollow ceilings to catch intruders without alerting them to the sensor's physical presence.

  • Smart Smart-Home Lighting Switches: Install inside ceiling fixtures or light enclosures to automatically turn on porch or corridor lights whenever a person enters the area.

  • Touchless Gateway Controls: Act as an automated trigger for automatic doors, smart greeting systems, and interactive shop window displays.

  • Intelligent Waste Management: Mount inside plastic garbage bins to monitor trash level displacement or toggle automatic lid openers upon approach.

💡 Pro-Engineering Placement Tip: Because microwave signals bounce off metals, avoid mounting this sensor directly against metal plates, copper grids, or heavy aluminum foil linings, as this will trap the signal and block the sensing field. Additionally, maintain a distance of at least 1–2 centimeters between the sensor board and any surrounding plastic casings during installation to prevent signal dampening.
