4-20mA to 0-5V Current to Voltage Converter Module (Industrial Sensor Interface Board)

Bridge the gap between rugged industrial instrumentation and standard microcontrollers with the precision-engineered 4-20mA to 0-5V Converter Module. Designed specifically for high-reliability automation setups, this interface board translates standard industrial current loop signals into a clean, linear voltage output that matches the input range of standard microcontrollers.

In industrial environments, data is typically transmitted via current loops because current signals do not suffer from voltage drops or ambient electrical noise over massive cable runs. However, microcontrollers require analog voltage inputs to process data. This module acts as the perfect solid-state translator, converting current inputs into a steady voltage scale. It serves as the definitive choice for linking industrial pressure transmitters, flow meters, temperature probes, and weight sensors to development platforms like Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi.

Key Features

  • Industrial Current Loop Translation: Seamlessly converts standard industrial current signals into a proportional voltage output, allowing standard microcontrollers to read heavy-duty factory sensors.

  • Onboard Precision Zero & Span Tuning: Assembled with two independent, multi-turn trimmer potentiometers that allow you to finely calibrate the bottom baseline (Zero) and the maximum scale limit (Span) to achieve absolute linear measurement accuracy.

  • Flexible Input Signal Architecture: Supports standard current inputs up to 20 mA, with full hardware compatibility to process variant ranges like 0-20 mA as well.

  • Wide Operating Voltage Range: Functions reliably on any supply rail from 7V up to 36V DC, making it plug-and-play compatible with standard industrial 12V and 24V power systems.

  • High-Grade Operational Amplifier: Built around a highly stable operational amplifier grid, ensuring excellent linearity, minimal thermal drift, and rapid response times to dynamic sensor changes.

  • Industrial Terminal Block Connections: Features robust, 5.08mm pitch screw terminal blocks on both the input power/signal side and the output voltage side to ensure secure, vibration-resistant field wiring.

Hardware Wiring & Interface Terminal Mapping

The converter module features an intuitively organized dual-sided terminal layout to ensure straightforward wiring between your industrial sensors, power infrastructure, and microcontroller pins:

1. Input Side (3-Terminal Screw Block)

  • V+: Main DC power supply input. Connect to a stable positive voltage rail (7V to 36V DC).

  • V- / GND: System Power Ground Reference.

  • I+ (Current Input): Connects to the signal output wire coming from your 4-20mA industrial sensor transmitter.

2. Output Side (3-Terminal Screw Block)

  • VOUT (Voltage Output): Outputs the converted 0-5V DC analog signal. Connect this wire straight to an Analog-to-Digital Converter input pin on your microcontroller.

  • GND: Common signal ground path that links your microcontroller ground rail with the module tracking baseline.

  • NC: No Connection (Internally isolated pad).

Calibration & Setup Procedure

To get the absolute highest measurement precision out of your industrial sensor interface board, follow this simple hardware calibration routine before locking the system down:

  1. Power the Board: Connect your main DC supply (e.g., 24V) across the V+ and V- terminals.

  2. Set the Zero Baseline: Apply a steady 4 mA current signal to the I+ input. Use a small screwdriver to gently adjust the onboard ZERO potentiometer until the voltage reading at the VOUT pin registers exactly 0.0V.

  3. Set the Maximum Span: Increase the input current signal to a full 20 mA. Gently rotate the onboard SPAN potentiometer until the voltage reading at the VOUT pin registers exactly 5.0V.

  4. Lock In: Your converter module is now perfectly calibrated across a highly accurate linear curve, ready to stream continuous analog data straight into your software code.

Common Applications

  • Industrial Sensor Integration: Connect heavy-duty factory instrumentation—such as pneumatic pressure transducers and fluid flow sensors—directly to low-power automation networks.

  • SCADA & PLC Expansion Nodes: Act as an affordable, high-precision intermediate signal conditioner to expand analog input arrays on monitoring rigs.

  • Remote Environmental Monitoring: Deploy inside agricultural automation control panels to gather reliable, noise-free metrics from distant soil moisture probes and ambient weather instruments.

  • Robotics Process Automation: Ideal for building custom diagnostic equipment, laboratory test stations, and automated process control simulation panels.
